Some of the biggest frustrations with any project are how do I know it makes a positive difference, does it really support the mission, did we get value, how long will that value last, and lastly did we learn anything from the effort? It's about being mindful of time, money, and valuable resources. Rich is a respected and well-known healthcare CIO/VP, with more than 30 years of healthcare management experience. He is strategically focused on providing innovative IT solutions in support of business, clinical and research needs. Rich’s methods emphasize positive ROI, patient safety and improved efficiency and outcomes. His record of successfully implementing ERP, clinical systems and electronic medical records systems ​has resulted in numerous awards including winner of the CIO 100 award for 2008 (CIO Magazine), Top 25 IT Managers 2010 (Information Management)​​, HIMSS Stage 6 and Davies award (2018)

Rich has been an advocate for IT enabled clinical transformation and well run IT and Data Governance structures supported by an effective PMO. He has authored effective strategic IT plans and roadmaps for EMR, Imaging, Security, Interoperability etc. More recently has guided organizations toward significant growth in advanced analytics and data warehousing. All of which sits atop infrastructure and service levels that meet the requirements of a “High Reliability” institution. A “servant leader” known for building strong relationships and fostering teamwork.

Rich has set the IT vision for multiple healthcare organizations, supported by effective strategic and tactical plans that define the best practice use of IT in support of patient care and operational excellence. Rich has driven governance structures and developed multiple mature PMO models to support the needs and requirements of the organization.

Rich is currently working as an executive leader for Starbridge Advisors and has completed multiple engagements as an interim CIO and Executive Information Technology leader.

Now looking to leverage the 12 years at VCU, 23 years as a CIO in 3 academic medical centers and 41 years of healthcare experience and success to assist other organizations facing IT related challenges.
Rich holds a B.A. in Biology, an M.S. degree in medical biology and certificates in Healthcare Management from the Univ. of Texas and Harvard School of Public Health. He is a Fellow of HIMSS, CPHIMSS certified, a Fellow of CHIME, and CHCIO certified.
